Steam is in trouble, and it’s about to get worse.
As it is, it’s the No. 1 platform for online gaming on mobile and tablets.
That’s up from No. 4 in 2015, and as a result, it currently holds the second-highest share of the mobile gaming market after Apple.
And the big question: will it continue to be that way?
“I would say the numbers are in the favor of the PC, but the PC is clearly growing,” said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Piper Jaffray.
“The growth of the console market, for example, has slowed considerably.”
According to Pachtern, while the PC and console are on par in terms of revenue per user, the mobile market is “a much smaller market.”
That means that, in the future, people who purchase mobile games will have to pay a higher price than people who buy on the PC.
This means that the PC may continue to outsell the console for the foreseeable future.
“I don’t think the PC has the same impact on the console as the PC does on the mobile industry,” Pachner said.
“There are a number of factors that will play into it, including the market dynamics of mobile gaming, but there is certainly a lot of uncertainty about what’s going to happen with the future.”
So what is the future for the PC?
Pachberger said that Microsoft has the potential to have a massive resurgence of PC gaming if it takes the right steps to build out its gaming business.
“If Microsoft can be successful in the mobile space, I think they could have a major impact on how we’re going to see the future of gaming on PCs,” he said.
Pachter also sees an opportunity for the Xbox platform to overtake the PC in the next 10 years, and said that a strong Microsoft ecosystem could allow the PC to continue to grow for a while longer.
“Microsoft has an amazing ecosystem of games and services that are available on Windows,” he explained.
“Microsoft has always had the PC as a niche product.
But if Microsoft can get the right players into that niche, it can make a big dent in the market.
And, for a company that has been in the PC space for a long time, that’s a huge opportunity.”
